Travelling to Zernez by car is a convenient option. It takes approximately 2 hours to reach Zernez from Zurich. To get there, take the highway from Zurich to Chur and then exit in the direction of Davos/Vereina.
Once you reach Vereina, you can either take the car train through the mountains for CHF 37 each way, or drive over the pass via Davos. However, driving over the pass is not recommended for heavy busses or old cars, as it can be hard on the brakes.
