Artist Applications for Burning Mountain Festival: Crafting Art in the Heart of the Alps

Welcome to Burning Mountain Festival, a place where nature, creativity, and community converge at one of the highest festival grounds in Europe. Set in the magnificent Engadin Valley, our festival is not just about music and performance but also about transforming the landscape with art that inspires, interacts, and endures the elements. We’re excited to collaborate with artists who want to bring their unique vision to life here. Below, you’ll find essential information and requirements for your project proposal.

Terrain and Environmental Conditions

The rugged beauty of the Engadin Valley also presents unique challenges for installation:

  • Shallow Topsoil: Our festival ground has only 50cm of humus before layers of stones, sand, and rocks. We strongly encourage artists to avoid digging or modifying the terrain when possible, to preserve the natural environment.

  • Weather Considerations: Wind and rain are frequent companions at our altitude, so all artworks must be built to withstand these conditions. Ensure they’re weather-secure and, if needed, consider fencing for protection while allowing interactivity and sturdiness.

Artist Responsibilities

Artists are expected to bring all required materials, tools, and equipment for their installations. Please note:

  • Materials and Resources: While a small hardware store is available in the village, it is relatively costly. We can assist by providing heavy machinery (forklifts, excavators, lifting platforms) and wood upon order.

  • Recommended Building Resources: Wood is a practical option for many installations, especially wooden rinds which are the most economical choice. If you plan to use wooden beams or tree trunks (note: young trunks above 5m are typically expensive), these must be ordered in advance.

  • Electricity and Lighting: We will provide an electricity source, but artists are responsible for lighting their installations at night. This includes planning for cables, connections, and ensuring all electrical components are compatible with Swiss adapters or plugs.

  • Artwork Removal: After the festival, artists are responsible for dismantling and removing their artworks, leaving the area ready for restoration or taking the installation back for future storage.

Special Permissions

For artists interested in incorporating fire elements:

  • Burning Artworks: Burning is permitted, but artists must seek prior permission for any plans involving open flames.

  • Young Tree Trunks: If these are needed, they can be arranged, but please consider that lengths above 5m are at a higher cost.

Application Requirements

To apply, please submit the following:

  1. Detailed Project Description: Include a sketch or images that represent your proposed artwork or installation.

  2. Project Budget: A breakdown of the total project costs, excluding any fees for your services.

  3. Artist Bio and Image: A short bio (up to 300 characters) for our website, along with an image of yourself and any relevant social media channels.

Application Process

We’re thrilled to see your creative ideas and unique visions! All submissions will be reviewed early in the year, and selected projects will be eligible for funding through our Arts Fund Program. Following the selection, a Q&A session with all chosen artists will be held via online meeting to finalize details. Once the artwork selections are announced, detailed planning can commence.

Let’s create something unforgettable together!
